Prog Music Suggestions

I need some new prog bands to check out. Can anyone suggest anything? I like Beardfish and the Flower Kings if that helps.

Re: Prog Music Suggestions

What else do you like? smile King Crimson, Jethro Tull, The Tangent, Van Der Graaf Generator, Premiata Forneria Marconi? Also, do you exclude jazz fusion? I don't consider such things prog like ProgArchives does for some reason, but I am a fan of jazz nonetheless and may be able to suggest good things.

Well, the other bands on these forums are pretty good!

You might also like to check out Hypnos 69, Black Bonzo, Magenta, Anglagard, Lazuli...

Re: Prog Music Suggestions

Oh yes, definitely listen to Anglagard if you don't in addition to being an incredibly good dark symphonic prog band, they, along with Roine Stolt and a few other Swedish prog bands, helped start the third wave of prog.

I listen to some of the old prog bands like Yes, ELP, Moody Blues, some of the early Genesis (I don't like most of the Phil Collins stuff) and of course King Crimson and Jethro Tull.  I also like Jazz Fusion too, not as much as I like Prog though. There is a band I like too called Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. I haven't heard of the last two you mentioned I will check them out. Thanks for the suggestions. Also, some other bands I like are Dream Theater, Scale the Summit, Zappa, Liquid Tension Experiment, Transatlantic, and Greg Howe.

I couldn't find Magenta, if you could provide a link that would be great.  Also when I looked up Lazuli on their Wikipedia article, it references this forum.

Re: Prog Music Suggestions

Be careful with Van Der Graaf Generator. They're probably my favorite band, but I admit they are probably more difficult to get into than most of the bands listed so far. If it helps, my favorite VDGG albums are Pawn Hearts, Godbluff, and Still Life. I would suggest you go for everything between "H to He" and "World Record" though.

As for Premiata Forneria Marconi, they're sort of like the King Crimson of Italian Prog, in that they changed their music style very frequently. Be sure to check what you're getting before you buy it, because some PFM albums are just English versions of the original Italian albums. Storia Di Un Minuto is definitely my favorite PFM album and probably one of my favorite Italian Prog albums in general. PFM is a great place to start with Italian Prog as well, and if you like them I suggest you buy a few albums by Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso and/or Le Orme. There are many many MANY more Italian prog bands, but these three released more albums than all of the others, so they're the best place to start.

Since you didn't mention ever having heard of Camel, I will take the liberty. Do yourself a favor and get a hold of Music Inspired by the Snow Goose. Also acceptable would be Moonmadness, Mirage, or the selftitled debut (though it isn't QUITE on par with the other three) in my opinion those are the only good Camel studio albums, but I'm sure many people will disagree.

As for Jazz Fusion, Return to Forever is absolutely necessary. Get a hold of Hymn to the Seventh Galaxy, No Mystery, Romantic Warrior, and Where Have I Known You Before (not listed in chronological order) RtF's first two albums are also good, but they were made in a different style of lighter fusion. If you want something super f*cking energetic, get a hold of Meeting of the Spirits and Birds of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra. f*cking INCREDIBLE SHIT! Speaking of f*cking incredible shit, get Al Di Meola's first three solo albums. He was the guitarist on three of the albums I mentioned by Return to Forever. The albums are Land of the Midnight Sun, Elegant Gypsy (the best, if I have to pick) and Casino. If you disregard everything else in this gigantic post, at least watch this video to bask in the glory of Mr. Di Meola's f*cking incredible shredding power: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Atz9vzTAUh0

http://www.last.fm/user/TheDogman - This is my Last.fm, to give you some of an idea of my listening tastes. If you want, I can suggest a lot more,  I just mentioned a few of the bands that are on my mind right now (and some that are constantly there).

Re: Prog Music Suggestions

I also would have suggested Pain of Salvation because they are another one of my favorite bands, but as you are a fan of Dream Theater, Scale the Summit, and Beardfish, I'm sure you have heard of them already.

Re: Prog Music Suggestions

I have just come to the realization that while I may be a master of various movements within the First Wave (if I do say so myself) modern prog is somewhat beyond me (which stands to reason, because there's a much greater proliferation). Anyway, Steve, you seem to know quite a few, do you think you could suggest some more? I did a wee bit of research on what you suggested already and wrote down the names of the ones that interested me. Check my Last.fm if you want to know if I've heard of it, or if you just want to see the sort of stuff I like already. Just one request please, NO NEO PROG! I can't stand that stuff tongue

I would apologize for hijacking the thread, Joe, but I feel like anything suggested to me would help you as well, so I don't think you'll mind smile

Ah yes - Lazuli split and somebody referenced a message here. I hear they have reformed again though (with some new members).

Magenta - http://www.magenta-web.co.uk - http://www.myspace.com/magentauk  - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magenta_(Welsh_band)

Lazuli - http://www.lazuli-music.com/ (site is currently just a holding page)

Re: Prog Music Suggestions

I'd recommend listening to these:

The Night Watch
NeBeLNeST
Paatos
Spock's Beard
Gordian Knot
UKZ
KTU
Museo Rosenbach
Biglietto Per L'Inferno
Goblin
Fabio Frizzi
Liquid Scarlet
Qoph
Morte Macabre
Landberk

And there's nothing like Birdsongs really. But if you're into that stuff, there's some nice live footage on StudioM, as well as many other great bands:
http://www.studiomlive.com/nearfest2001/index.html

Also, check out Progarchives. There are so many samples there you can listen to.
Also, if you like Italian Prog, you should check out http://www.italianprogrock.com/ (with samples!!) and http://www.italianprog.com/
And don't forget http://www.gepr.net/geprfram.htm very nice site and one of the first.

Good luck hunting!

Oh yeah, I love Spock's Beard and Gordian Knot. And I will be sure check out all those bands you mentioned. It seems I really need to widen my vocabulary of music, I mean there are just so many of bands I have never heard of.

Re: Prog Music Suggestions

Since you seem to like that whole metal fusion thing (Liquid Tension, Scale the Summit, and Gordian Knot) I suggest Exivious, Fromuz (who just realized a very very very nice new album big_smile) Planet X is also great if you haven't heard of them already. It's what Derek Sherinian started up once he left Dream Theater. You also might like his solo albums, but I find them to be somewhat lacking (especially when he has Ozzy Os-er, I mean Zakk Wylde on vocals).

Actually, of all of those I recommend Fromuz the most. Not only are they one of my favorite bands, but they admit to have a lot of influence from Dream Theater (it shows, somewhat) which would probably appeal to you. Not to say they're a clone, they aren't remotely similar. They're very eclectic, so it's hard to describe them.
