On connaissait la situation financière précaire du festival de musique gratuit de Verviers, organisé par l'ASBL Verviers Music Festivals. Cela se confirme ce vendredi 18 avril 2025 : l'événement qui faisait vivre le centre-ville de Verviers fin août depuis 20 ans n'aura pas lieu en 2025. Un nouveau rendez-vous festif pourrait-il faire vibrer le centre-ville de Verviers dans le futur ?

Depuis 2003 et la première édition du festival gratuit FiestaCity, nombreux sont les artistes à avoir mis le feu au centre-ville de Verviers à la fin du mois d'août. C'est bien simple, depuis plus de 20 ans, ce rendez-vous permet à toutes les générations de se retrouver dans une ambiance musicale de haut vol. La liste est bien plus longue, mais rappelons que grâce à FiestaCity, et son programmateur historique Francis Geron entre autres, Verviers a pu accueillir de grands noms de la chanson belge et française (Cali, Louis Bertignac, Adamo, Alain Chamfort, De Palmas, Michel Delpech, Georges Moustaki, BJ Scott, Axelle Red,..) et des références internationales (Boney M, Chico & The Gypsies, The Rubettes, The Animals, The Stranglers, Cock Robin,…).

Des coûts devenus impayables

Mais FiestaCity ne fera pas vibrer Verviers cet été 2025. La faute aux coûts toujours plus importants. "Le problème qu'on a eu, c'est que pratiquement depuis 20 ans, on fait FiestaCity avec le même budget. On se rend bien compte qu'en 20 ans, les choses ont évolué. Et on n'y arrive plus, confirme Francis Geron, programmateur. Il y a la technique qui a augmenté, on va dire normalement, peut-être de 50 % en 20 ans… Mais les artistes, là, c'est incommensurable. Avant, un artiste faisait des tournées, quitte même à les faire à perte, mais pour pouvoir vendre des albums, et gagner sa vie en vendant des albums. Aujourd'hui, avec Spotify et tout ça, ils ne vendent plus d'albums. Maintenant, c'est le contraire. On fait un album pour pouvoir partir en tournée et gagner de l'argent avec les concerts. Un artiste qui coûtait 20000 € avant coûte 50000 € maintenant. Et le budget artistique de FiestaCity a toujours tourné autour de 100000 € (sur un budget au total de 250000 €).Pour refaire FiestaCity comme on le faisait avant, il faudrait doubler le budget."

Or les sponsors sont de plus en plus difficiles à trouver et convaincre. Si l'organisation pouvait compter sur un subside de 50000 € de la Ville de Verviers, elle pouvait aussi tenir compte d'une avance de 50000 €, toujours de la Ville. Mais l'an dernier, cette avance fut impossible à rembourser. "On a pu payer tout le monde, payer les artistes mais ce qu'on ne sait pas faire, c'est rendre les 50000 € à la Ville", poursuit Francis Geron.

Et la suite ?

"Il faut savoir qu'on cherche des solutions pour maintenir un événement pendant l'été mais d'une nature différente, commente le mayeur Maxime Degey (Ensemble Verviers). Il est d'ailleurs prévu de se voir avec l'ASBL organisatrice et tous ceux qui veulent croire à un autre projet. On planche sur la suite, on travaille sur des activités qui ramèneront du monde à Verviers comme le faisait FiestaCity."

Et Francis Geron, serait-il partant pour créer un autre événement ? "Jusqu'à maintenant, on m'a demandé de faire FiestaCity. J'ai fait ça bénévolement pour faire plaisir et par passion. Maintenant, si on me demande autre chose, on verra si ce sera possible. Mais moi, je n'ai pas un projet à présenter. Il faudrait d'abord savoir quel budget on pourrait récolter et ce qu'on pourrait faire avec ce budget-là. Ce qui est déjà certain, c'est qu'on n'aura jamais assez pour refaire la même chose que FiestaCity. C'est le problème des autorités de trouver l'argent. Personnellement, je suis à disposition, si on me demande de faire quelque chose, j'essaierai. Aujourd'hui, je n'ai aucun regret, au contraire, je suis très fier d'avoir fait ça."

À voir donc ce qui sera possible d'organiser ou non pour continuer à dynamiser le centre-ville, comme le faisait si bien FiestaCity.

Could a new festive event bring Verviers city center to life in the future?

Since 2003 and the first edition of the free FiestaCity festival, numerous artists have set Verviers city center ablaze at the end of August. It's quite simple: for over 20 years, this event has allowed all generations to gather in a high-flying musical atmosphere. The list is much longer, but let's remember that thanks to FiestaCity, and its long-time promoter Francis Geron, among others, Verviers has been able to welcome big names in Belgian and French music (Cali, Louis Bertignac, Adamo, Alain Chamfort, De Palmas, Michel Delpech, Georges Moustaki, BJ Scott, Axelle Red, etc.) and international icons (Boney M, Chico & The Gypsies, The Rubettes, The Animals, The Stranglers, Cock Robin, etc.).

Costs that have become unaffordable

But FiestaCity will not be bringing Verviers to life this summer of 2025. This is due to ever-increasing costs. "The problem we've had is that for practically 20 years, we've been doing FiestaCity with the same budget. We realize that in 20 years, things have evolved. And we can't do it anymore," confirms Francis Geron, promoter. "There's the technology that has increased, let's say normally, maybe 50% in 20 years... But the artists, there, it's immeasurable. Before, an artist would tour, even if it meant doing it at a loss, but to be able to sell albums, and earn a living by selling albums. Today, with Spotify and all that, they don't sell albums anymore. Now, it's the opposite. We make an album to be able to go on tour and earn money from concerts. An artist who used to cost €20,000 costs €50,000 now. And the artistic budget for FiestaCity has always been around €100,000 (out of a total budget of €250,000). To do FiestaCity like we did before, we would have to double the budget."

However, sponsors are increasingly difficult to find and convince. While the organization could count on a €50,000 subsidy from the City of Verviers, it could also consider a €50,000 advance, also from the City. But last year, this advance was impossible to repay. "We were able to pay everyone, pay the artists, but what we don't know how to do is return the €50,000 to the City," continues Francis Geron.

And what's next?

"It's important to know that we're looking for solutions to maintain an event during the summer, but of a different nature," comments Mayor Maxime Degey (Ensemble Verviers). "We're also planning to meet with the organizing non-profit organization and anyone who wants to support another project. We're working on what's next, on activities that will bring people back to Verviers, like FiestaCity did."

And would Francis Geron be interested in creating another event? "Until now, I've been asked to organize FiestaCity. I did it voluntarily, for the pleasure of others and out of passion. Now, if I'm asked for something else, we'll see if it's possible. But I don't have a project to present. We'd first need to know what budget we could raise and what we could do with that budget. What's already certain is that we'll never have enough to repeat the same thing as FiestaCity. Finding the money is the authorities' problem. Personally, I'm available; if I'm asked to do something, I'll try. Today, I have no regrets; on the contrary, I'm very proud to have done it."

So, it remains to be seen what will be possible to organize, or not, to continue revitalizing the city center, as FiestaCity did so well.
