Les critiques cherchaient encore, alors, à repérer l’homme qui serait appelé à succéder symboliquement à Coltrane, considéré comme le dernier géant. Branford Marsalis et Courtney Pine avaient été les challengers des années ’80 : la décennie suivante, Redman et Carter leur emboîtaient le pas, bien malgré eux, dans cette quête absurde. Né en 1969 à Detroit, James Carter est considéré, dès son arrivée sur la scène internationale, comme une sorte de prodige : multi-instrumentiste, improvisateur jusqu’auboutiste et forcené, explorateur infatigable des sons et des timbres, il voue aussi un véritable culte aux racines et à l’histoire du jazz, ce qui donne à sa musique une profondeur qui manque à tant de ses contemporains progressistes. Le caractère volontiers démonstratif de sa musique n’en masque jamais le propos. Fascinant à la clarinette basse et au baryton, séduisant au ténor et au soprano, Carter aime transporter un public dans un état second. Longtemps adepte des (très) longues improvisations ultras qui laissaient l’auditeur sur les genoux au terme du premier morceau, il s’est récemment montré intéressé par les formes plus courtes et plus reserrées (c’est le cas sur Present Tense, son dernier album, sorti sur Emracy). Empruntant des parts de lyrisme à Dolphy autant qu’à Bechet, James Carter a atteint aujourd’hui une pleine maturité : à ses côtés, on notera la présence du jeune trompettiste Corey Wilkes (membre actif de la jeune scène de Chicago, partenaire d’Ernest Dawkins et de l’Ethnic Heritage, et qui a rempli il y a quelques années la lourde tâche de remplacer Lester Bowie au sein de l’Art Ensemble of Chicago) ; du pianiste et organiste Gerard Gibbs, leader du band Organ’yz ; du légendaire Ralphe Armstrong, figure de proue de la basse électrique dans les seventies (Mahavishnu, Zappa etc), aujourd’hui contrebassiste musclé ; et du batteur polyvalent Leonard King. The band really wants to be on the road as much as possible and have done some fantastic gigs, for Black Bonzo is a band you just must see live in order to fully understand the bands ambitions and musical statement. Black Bonzo records a second album "Sound Of The Apocalypse" in 2006, released in June 2007 . The album got good reviews in rock magazines such as Record Collector and Classic Rock Magazine. A European tour was put together in September 2007 and was later followed by a short US tour in May 2008. Later in June Black Bonzo toured the UK with good response.  In February 2008 the recordings of the third album "Guillotine Drama" began. By Christmas Magnus Lindberg at Tonteknik had finished the mixing and mastering of the album and, as usual, he did a fantastic job.
