Il signe un contrat avec Chrisalys records à l'automne 1979. MSG est le nom abrégé du groupe dont les chanteurs furent, Gary Barden (futur Stateroopers), Graham Bonnet (ex Rainbow, futur Alcatrazz), Robin Mc Auley (ex Grand Prix) jusqu'en 1992. Guitariste très talentueux, Michael Schenker a comme signe distinctif l'utilisation de sa guitare Gibson Flying V dont il dispose 5 modèles très caractéristiques avec notamment un design noir et blanc. C'est vers l'âge de 17 ans qu'il a pris possession de cet instrument en l'empruntant à son frère Rudolf. Selon Michael, la combinaison entre les amplis Marshall et la Flying V lui apportait exactement le son heavy qu'il recherchait. Depuis ses débuts au sein de Scorpions ce son est resté typique "Michael Schenker". Kirk Hammett du célèbre groupe Metallica cite Michael Schenker comme une influence majeure pour Lui. MICHAEL SCHENKER fête ses 30 ans de tournée en réunissant un line up exceptionnel « TEMPLE OF ROCK »: HERMAN RAREBELL (Batterie), FRANCIS BUCHHOLZ (Basse) (Ex Scorpions), DOOGIE WHITE (chant) (Rainbow/Mamsteen), WAYNE FINDLAY (clavier) MSG), une sortie d’un DVD LIVE en décembre 2012 & un NOUVEL ALBUM pour 2013.
