Après avoir été membre de Childsplay, il fut le chanteur du groupe Wolfsbane (de 1984 à 1993) qu'il quitta après la publication de leur troisième album. Mais il est surtout connu car la même année, il devient le chanteur du groupe Iron Maiden, qui venait de perdre Bruce Dickinson parti pour des projets solo. Sélectionné parmi des centaines de chanteurs audités, il fut engagé en décembre 1993. The X Factor fut son premier enregistrement avec Iron Maiden, publié en 1995. La tournée qui suivi dut être écourtée suite à des problèmes allergiques de Bayley. Le groupe retourna en studio pour Virtual XI (1998). Une nouvelle fois la tournée dût être écourtée. Ces albums ne sont pas les plus appréciés des fans, qui déploraient de plus les difficultés vocales de Bayley sur les anciens morceaux du groupe. Bayley composa cependant quelques bons morceaux pour Iron Maiden.Fin 1999, Bayley quitta Iron Maiden lors du retour de Bruce Dickinson. Il forma l'année suivante son propre groupe Blaze.
