Aujourd’hui, c’est devenu  un jam band incontournable. A l’époque, le guitariste Warren Haynes et le bassiste Allen Woody formaient avec le batteur Matt Abts un collectif  qui mettait à l’honneur l’improvisation, le (hard) blues, le rock sudiste et le vrai rock. Si les albums studio « Gov’t Mule » (1995) et « Dose » (1998) ont bénéficié d’un bon accueil, c’est surtout avec les enregistrements live « Live from Roseland Ballroom » (1996) et «  Live…With a Little help from Our Friends » (1999) qu’ils ont vraiment montré que leurs morceaux sont faits pour la scène. Si les albums studio « Gov’t Mule » (1995) et « Dose » (1998) ont bénéficié d’un bon accueil, c’est surtout avec les enregistrements live « Live from Roseland Ballroom » (1996) et «  Live…With a Little help from Our Friends » (1999) qu’ils ont vraiment montré que leurs morceaux sont faits pour la scène. Allen Woody meurt juste après la sortie de « Life Before Insanity » (2000), un choc que Warren Haynes et Matt Abts mettront pas mal de temps à surmonter. Haynes offre à nouveau ses services à des groupes-amis, comme « The Allman Brothers band », « Phil Lesh and Friends » et « The Dead » - qui s'est reformé - avant de s’investir à nouveau à fond dans Gov’t Mule. Suivront encore une série d’albums studio et de cd-live qui renforceront encore leur réputation de groupe de jam. En 2010 ils ont présenté en live leur nouvel album studio « By a Thread » et leur nouveau bassiste (Jorgen Carlsson). Et ce n’est pas un hasard si la guitare de  Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) s’invite sur « Broke Down on The Brazos ». L'album tant attendu, a été reçu avec enthousiasme par le public et la presse.
