If you look up the "official" online encyclopaedias of the genre, you will find strict boundaries. Certain bands are filed away neatly, while others are granted "proto-prog" or "prog-related" status.But what about the outcasts? Acts that recorded individual progressive songs, despite being unlikely ever to feature in a prog database?With this chronological selection of ten stealth-prog masterpieces, I explore songs from 1966 to 1976 that rarely, if ever, feature in discussions of prog songs by non-prog artists. I've tried to avoid the usual suspects that tend to crop up in such discussions.The Buzz You're Holding Me Down (from a 7-inch single, 1966)Produced by the eccentric Joe Meek, this obscure British single merged raw beat music with an unusually unsettling, experimental sound. Meek's distinctive studio techniques lend the recording a strange, almost hallucinatory atmosphere, pushing it beyond conventional mid-Sixties pop. A fascinating example of how progressive rock emerged from British beat as well.The Tickle Subway (Smokey Pokey World) (from a 7-inch single, 1967)Produced by Tony Visconti, long before his celebrated work with David Bowie, this obscure British psychedelic single features intricate vocal harmonies, classically tinged piano, driving drums and a wonderfully offbeat arrangement. Its unpredictable melodic twists and surreal atmosphere hint at progressive ideas emerging outside the recognised prog scene of the late Sixties.Mike Mainieri (feat. Sally Waring) The Wind (from Journey Thru an Electric Tube, 1968)An understated yet adventurous piece blends electric vibraphone, progressive-leaning flute, a moody guitar solo and ethereal female vocals into an atmospheric, subtly unconventional soundscape. Undoubtedly an early jazz-rock track by a New York vibraphonist, it anticipated the genre before it had fully established its identity. Rooted in the experimental jazz of its time, it combines exploratory improvisation with intricate instrumental textures that also invite a progressive-music reading.Taste Blister on the Moon (from Taste, 1969)The Irish rock icon Rory Gallagher is best known as a formidable blues-rock guitarist, and Taste's power-trio format might suggest a similarly straightforward approach. Yet the opening track of their debut album is anything but conventional. With its nervous atmosphere, jagged acoustic-and-electric riffing, military-style snare rolls and abrupt rhythmic stops and starts, it takes blues-rock into distinctly progressive territory.Laura Nyro Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp (from Christmas and the Beads of Sweat, 1970)An impressionistic piece blending Nyro's expressive piano and ethereal vocals with unusual instrumental colours, delicate percussion, and Alice Coltrane's harp and Joe Farrell's evocative flute. Its shifting textures, jazz-inflected harmonies and poetic atmosphere reveal a richly adventurous compositional approach in an artist who stood well outside the established prog scene.Fickle Pickle Down Smokey Lane (from 7-inch single, 1971)This overlooked British gem is a fine example of progressive pop, combining intricate vocal harmonies, adventurous melodic shifts and an elaborate arrangement. Its unexpected musical turns take it well beyond conventional chart-oriented pop, despite the group's absence from the recognised prog canon.Joe Walsh Mother Says (from Barnstorm, 1972)Years before he joined The Eagles, American rock star Joe Walsh formed a band called Barnstorm. This track from their self-titled debut (also credited as Joe Walsh's first solo album) moves from pastoral acoustic passages into sections driven by heavy, distorted organ, the sounds of the ARP Odyssey synthesiser, complete with dense vocal harmonies and a highly unpredictable, progressive structure – a true "heavy-prog" anthem!Mouse All the Fallen Teen Angels (from 7-inch single, 1973)This obscure British recording captures an adventurous side of early-Seventies pop, with a more elaborate melodic approach than its relative obscurity might suggest. Another reminder that progressive ideas were not confined to bands already recognised as part of the prog-rock movement.More To je dug put ("It's a Long Journey") (from More, 1974)This atmospheric ballad by the Croatian pop band More (transl. "Sea") opens with acoustic guitar before a striking female vocal takes centre stage. A distinctly proggy flute solo, shifting rhythms and a dreamy atmosphere give the song an adventurous character that goes beyond conventional ballad writing. An overlooked gem from the former Yugoslav scene.Slade How Does It Feel? (from Slade in Flame, 1975)Best known for their rowdy, foot-stomping glitter-rock anthems, Slade revealed a different side of themselves with this standout track from the Slade in Flame soundtrack. Built around piano and gradually enriched by brass and orchestral textures, it develops into a richly layered, emotionally charged finale – a striking departure from their usual hit-single formula.Good Rats Ratcity in Blue (from Ratcity in Blue, 1976)The title track from Good Rats' 1976 album Ratcity in Blue showcases the Long Island band's more adventurous side. With its shifting musical ideas, complex instrumentation, and innovative guitar solo, it ventures well beyond conventional hard rock into decidedly "heavy-prog" territory.
